![]() Beyond that, however, the women of Coven mostly fought each other - note how much precious screen time was devoted to the "catfight" between Madison and Misty (Lily Rabe) in the season's penultimate episode.Īnd while the women did have moments of triumph over their male oppressors, they were far more successful fighting each other than the men in their lives. The season began with a retread of the rape-revenge convention, as young witch Madison (Emma Roberts) was drugged and gang raped by a group of frat boys, whom she then murdered with the power of magic. The themes of female power were explored on occasion, but the writers didn't delve much deeper than the Spice Girls did in the '90s. American Horror Story: Coven is followed by American Horror Story: Freak Show. There's something admirable about a series where seven of the nine leads are women, but Coven was not nearly as feminist as it appeared to be on the surface. It is a bit of crapshoot, but it still is fun to see it unfold. You can watch a season and like a season but then not enjoy the next one. ![]() The series continues to warp and change season to season and that in itself makes it worth coming back to. It has moments of horror (like the Halloween zombie invasion), but then also has moments where Stevie Nicks shows up and gives a music video…it is a weird, odd looking season.Īmerican Horror Story: Coven shows that American Horror Story still has tricks up its sleeve. American Horror Story: Asylum is dark and this is the flipside of it. I don’t like the visuals as much as the other years. The plot and the limited episodes just don’t allow it. ![]() A majority of the characters however do have uneven development and never really seem to get fleshed out. I particularly like the Kathy Bates/Gabourey Sidibe relationship which shows the most growth and development. Jessica Lange continues to make it look easy as she switches from role to role but newcomers Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, and Gabourey Sidibe also do a great job. The cast is strong (like in previous seasons), but there are many standouts. It does work in context of the series, but it might not be what everyone expects from American Horror Story. There are a few tense moments, but this season is much more tongue-in-cheek with the horror…almost like an episode of a WB show more than an episode of American Horror Story or even a Tales from the Crypt episode. It is a lot like the ending of The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King that just goes on and on.Īmerican Horror Story: Coven has a lot more humor than the previous entries. American Horror Story: Coven shows a change in tone but still has that weird, post climax moment that just doesn’t feel connected to the story. The second season ( American Horror Story: Asylum) had a lot of great stuff going on it but also had some issues with the end. ![]() The first season of American Horror Story (which later came to be known as American Horror Story: Murder House) was good and creepy, but suffered from a really awful last episode. ![]() Will AHS: Coven make you stab your eyes out?
